Hope it's short, too. Question for you: do you or older relatives remember this "smoke season" from childhood in WA? I ask because it's become part of life on Vancouver Island (summer/early fall), too. I chatted with an older friend (b. 1923 in Victoria) and asked her if "smoke season" was a thing when she was young, and she said no. Hard no. In BC there were often fires in the interior (inland) esp near Osoyoos and up in the dry hills along the Trans-Canada . . . but to have smoky air every year is a relatively new thing.
Conditions started improving yesterday afternoon - we skipped the morning walk, but were able to go out around 5:30.
I also have a hard NO to smoke season being a thing when I was a kid. I took a look at my trusty Flickr time machine and my first mention of smoke was in 2007, then again in 2009 and 2010. Those were all along the lines of "oh, look at the sun with the haze from smoke from some fires somewhere." Then I skimmed through the August and September photos in my massive collection of photos, and it wasn't until 2017 that I had another batch of smoke-sun photos. I think it was around then that it's become a yearly thing. It varies each year, but the last couple of years were exceptionally bad with it going on for a long time.
This smoke is crazy. My kiddo did an XC meet today at Lake Wilderness. They forgot to take their inhaler. The wind and smoke effected all the kids. Times were really slow for everyone. The meet should have been canceled.
Yikes. Yes, the meet should have been canceled. I think we (the collective we) don't know how to say "stop" to things like this and stubbornly carry on. Sadly, it does damage to all of us. I hope they're okay!
Horrible. I worry for the pets, too. My brother had burning eyes and a headache from the smoke. He lives in Bellingham. I imagine it’s also uncomfortable for our pets. This is just awful.
I feel bad for my dog! We're staying inside as much as possible and have an air purifier, but many people don't. We've been through bad smoke here in the past before we got the purifier, it's no fun. My son is in Bellingham and was also feeling crummy.
I have a 5 year nature notebook and I'm in my 4th year. I haven't been particularly consistent at making entries but there has been an entry about the smoke every year since I started.
We were being careful about thanking our luck this summer, until the last two weeks rolled in. It's not been the worst I've ever seen, but pretty bad many days. Take care of yourselves 🧡

Thank Earth we had that super wet spring. This is California weather which is not a good look on Washington.
Anyways.
Cheers to prevailing West winds Anne and friends. Xoxoxo
Here here!
We lived in San Diego for 4 years - moved back to Seattle on '12. So sad for all our friends up and down the coast who are really struggling.
There's very few places that aren't affected anymore.
I moved from Sonoma county in 2017 because of the fires. My brother is still in Berkeley hanging on. I love that state so much it’s quite sad.

Sounds about right! Some years have been worse than others, but it's been pretty steady the last few years.
