That Sashukan looks so yummy! Be sure to go back to Carkeek later in September and early October. This is one of the creeks that salmon return to in the fall! If Rowland likes fish, keep your eyes on him because other animals will drag the carcasses onto the banks. And just in case you don’t know yet, raw salmon skin is not good for doggies.
Rowland doesn't get ANY salmon, not even cooked! It seems to disagree with him. He's pretty good about not eating things off the ground, he just sniffs at them and then moves on. Our old dog Syd was the opposite - he would eat anything and he especially liked rotten fish on the beach. We all paid the price whenever he managed that...
Thank you! I'm having a bit of a "newsletter identity crisis" and trying to decide how to approach it after a bit of a hiatus. My goal is to not burn out writing again. Glad to see you here and I'm looking forward to reading yours too!
Hooray for Carkeek Park! We're coming up on salmon return season, when there are scientists posted along Piper Creek to answer questions and point out tired fishes to passerby.
If you get a chance/like greenery, green shakshuka is also very tasty.
Or there's eggs in purgatory, which is the Italian version, in an arrabiata-like sauce.
Weirdly I haven't been reading any books--the heat sapped my ability to concentrate. But now that the weather has turned, I'm finally going to get to John Hodgman's Vacationland.
It's been stupidly hot here - I'm sure it would seem balmy to you. A/C isn't a thing here in the PNW, at least not in older houses. I was so happy to find a park with nice trails through the woods. There are more places for us to explore, it's just a matter of rousting ourselves to get out there. Also finding a time when it's not jam-packed with people. Meh. haha

😂🫢Rowland is so good!
He helped us realize how bad our other dog was! Syd was wild (also a rescue). But still a good dog.
Oops! It’s shakshuka!
The Shakshuka looks AMAZING!
IT IS
I love your newsletter mix of nature and food and art - all up my alley! That dish looks incredible and harissa is so tasty.

The heat sapped my ability to do quite a bit. There was a faint mist this morning while I was walking the dog and I nearly danced a jig!
The green shakshuka looks really tasty. Thank you!
Hello! Yes, those are kalamata olives. There's also sun dried tomatoes, and tahini dressing. I should have linked the recipe! Anyhow - here it is: https://cookieandkate.com/greek-kale-salad-recipe/
