That's Gneiss! #83 ~ Hot sun and hot rods
Last weekend was the first big event we attended here in our new home town - Cruzin’ to Colby. Cruising used to be a big thing here in Everett, and you now see signs reminding you that it’s illegal.
However, every year on Memorial Day weekend car enthusiasts can relive the thrill of driving up and down the street, showing off their cars and checking out all the other hot rods. Sort of.
Michael and I enjoy a good car show now and then, and were happy to learn there would be a big one so close to home. It is quite the event, with activities starting Saturday night and ending on Monday.
Sunday’s event is what they call a “controlled cruise.” Here’s some footage from 2018:
Doesn’t that look thrilling?
Up to 400 cars line up in the morning, then drive around and around a section of town that’s blocked off for FOUR HOURS.
We skipped that.
Instead, we went to the regular car show on Monday. It was a hot sunny day, so we stopped for one of those crazy margaritas at Tampico before walking around and looking at cars. There were all sorts of interesting things to see!
I saw not one, but two small children being pulled around in old cars like this. Note the important sippy cup holder in the rear!
So much shiny chrome!
I hope I don’t see this “art car” driving around town. There’s a bit of a visibility issue for the driver.
That’s a lovely hood ornament! One of my favorite features on old cars.
Here’s a Dodge Challenger and a Plymouth Barracuda (identifiable by the gills, of course). So pretty!
No car show would be complete without Elvis!
Yes it would.
All in all it was a fun time. The people watching was pretty good too.
This weekend was all about getting things done before we head off on our first camping trip of the year next week. I’ve got five busy days of work to get through before then.
Well, I can see a purple glow in the sky as the sun goes down, so it’s time to wrap this up. Until next week!
Tidbits
I’m spending less time on the computer and more time doing things, so another short list today.

Making: my mending project is coming along nicely. It’s slow going, but I’m getting the hang of it. I’m ready to add the next color. I’m also working on another guitar pedal box, but am not finished so no picture yet!
Recently eaten: another week, another new place to try. Some of my coworkers have been raving about Chop Express, so we decided to give it a go. Good choice! I had the gigantic Bulgoritto, and Michael tried the Bibimbap. Yummy!
Reading: I have three new things on the go! First is The Humorless Ladies of Border Control: Touring the Punk Underground from Belgrade to Ulaanbaatar by Franz Nicolay (former keyboardist for The Hold Steady). Touring is not glamorous, but one meets interesting people and sees interesting places. I also started reading Hippies in Our Midst, a 1968 book I picked up a while back in a used book store. The author spent time with the hippies of New York to get to know them and learn what made them tick, so to speak. Quaint at times, and definitely fascinating. Lastly I’m working on another old paperback called Weird Shadow From Beyond: an Anthology of Strange Stories. Ten creepy tales, also published in the 60’s. Lots of fun, light reading.
Video of the Week
I was poking around to set the mood for the car show, and found this gem. Enjoy!
Question of the Week
Answer if you wish, and I’ll share next week - anonymously of course. Just hit reply…
What would the title of the book/movie that’s the story of your life be?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last week, I asked if you could be doing anything right now (as opposed to your current occupation or primary time commitment), what would it be?
Audiobook narrator. Or the person who decides which books to adapt for film/TV/streaming.
Making art, subverting the dominant paradigm…
Good question! If money were no object and my time was my own, I would travel the world and experience other cultures and explore as many countries as possible. I would try different foods, visit cities and villages, listen to the stories of the locals, and hike hill and dale, too.
I’d be writing for a living.
Same answer as always - playing music, writing music, writing songs, recording music.
