That's Gneiss! #82 ~ BECAUSE WE CAN
Greetings from the middle of a holiday weekend and the bottom of a wine glass!
It’s been another busy week here at our house. We had an impromptu evening out in Seattle on Friday - BECAUSE WE CAN.
On Wednesday a friend invited us out to see a band Friday night at Neumos, and it was so easy to say yes! No long horrible drive back and forth. It turned out to be a very enjoyable night out, and I’m excited at the prospect that it will happen more frequently now that we live so much closer.
We started the evening out at the Comet Tavern for a drink. The Comet has been a favorite stop over the years, and is always a great place to begin festivities.
From there we headed north a few blocks to Queen Sheba Ethiopian restaurant. I got a lot of good tips for food from a friend, but when it came down to it we headed here. There are no Ethiopian restaurants in Everett - so sad! Some of my friends may remember that there was once a BBQ restaurant in this location. You could order your meal with varying strengths of sauce, including “Hot,” “Hot Hot,” and “You Can’t Make it Too Hot For Me.”
We had a very good meal, and I’ve got some great leftovers for lunch this week.
Then it was on to Neumos to see the band Earth. I’ve seen them several times, and they are a great band - though their music may not be for everyone (see below). I tend to like music that’s a bit more upbeat, but do enjoy them. It all starts to sound the same after a few songs.
Before they started playing I ran over to The Elliott Bay Book Company. *swoooon*
It had been quite a while since I found myself in a great book store. This corner was of particular interest - all graphic design and typography books! I wanted so many of them, and others I saw. As fantastic as it is living in Everett, this city is still lacking a good book store. I did find the location of Half Price Books…
The bathroom walls at the book store were quite fabulous.
Kill your T.V.
Seriously, just do it - you won’t regret it.
After spending half of my birthday money (thanks Mom & Dad!) I headed back to the bar where our friend had arrived and the show was under way. We sat upstairs and watched the show on the television screens! Haha. We could talk, sit down, and there were warning signs so we wouldn’t fall and break a hip.
I love our new life.
Tomorrow we’re heading to downtown Everett for the Cruzin’ to Colby car show. As is the case with everything, it will be SO MUCH BETTER than the car shows in Oak Harbor. Everything is better here. EVERYTHING.
So many things to do! Until next week…
Tidbits
Citizen science alert - help transcribe early UK weather data for Weather Rescue.
Maybe one of these other projects at Zooniverse is more to your liking. Try transcribing Australian prison records, or help identify burrowing owls in webcam shots.
the collected ahp - one of the newsletters I’m enjoying the most these days, especially her weekly “just trust me.” Always interesting!
Making: I started another mending project on my jeans - this one is going to take a while…
Recently eaten: in the past week I ate grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch THREE TIMES. Quality varied. The best was the Ol’ Smokey at The Cheesemonger’s Table in Edmonds (no surprise there). In the middle of the pack was the sandwich at Cafe Zippy here in Everett - not bad. At the “meh” end of things was the sandwich at The Sawmill Cafe in Mill Creek - how hard is it to make a good grilled cheese sandwich?
Reading: I finished up three books this week - Puckoon, which was like reading a movie. It did not help that I read little bits between long stretches of not reading it. A bit weird, and very much of its time. Last week I was thinking that After the Party was all right, but by the time I got to the end of it I was much more ambivalent. It was about an interesting historical incident (Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists), but the characters weren’t particularly sympathetic. It ended with a whimper, and could have been so much better. The third was The Art of Noticing: 131 Ways to Spark Creativity, Find Inspiration, and Discover Joy in the Everyday, which I will be purchasing. Full of so many good ideas, and resources for further investigation. Now I have to scour my bookshelves to decide what to read next!
Videos of the Week
Am I a bad person for getting so much enjoyment from this?
Earth - the band we saw Friday night. All of their songs are pretty much at this same pace.
The drummer has amazing restraint to maintain the same (slow) pace through an entire show. Doesn’t she ever want to just bust out with something a little different?
Question of the Week
Answer if you wish, and I’ll share next week - anonymously of course. Just hit reply…
If you could be doing anything right now (as opposed to your current occupation or primary time commitment), what would it be?

Last week I asked which arcade games were impossible for you to resist playing.
Galaga. Forever the best video game. I love Joust and Millipede too.
Skeeball is my game of choice. I used to be quite good at it, but as I no longer have hours to spend practicing, it's now a pleasant way to waste a couple quarters and sink a few balls--the solid wooden ones are the best, having a pleasing heft.
Favorite arcade video game? Defender. Or Donkey Kong. Or Tron.
Favorite old-timey arcade game? Skee-ball. :)
