That's Gneiss! #64 ~ Your weekly break from the horrors of the world
I can hardly believe just one week ago we were waiting to find our if we’d be approved to rent the new place! We got official approval on Monday morning, and since then it’s been a whirlwind of activity. Banking, paying deposits, packing - no time to rest! Michael has been doing some touch up work on the house to get it ready to sell. It’s amazing what a little bit of paint can do!
I drove by the house on Monday on my way to take care of the deposit and took a proper picture. Less than 15 minutes from work! I can’t wait to get moved and end the grueling commute.
Packing is coming along, and the pile of boxes is growing. We take possession this coming Friday, and can start moving things into the house. We’re planning the big move for the week of February 12th - we’ve postponed our trip to the Oregon coast until sometime after we get settled into the new place.
My priority this week (besides packing) is getting the utilities set up. Onward!
In which we live vicariously through others traveling the world.
Thank goodness I’ve got others to provide some newsletter content while I’m consumed with the moving process. Nolan, Mia, and Nolan’s dad are heading to Cambodia today after a few days in Singapore and Thailand. They share occasional photos via WhatsApp to prove that they are still alive and having a great time.
Singapore
Highlights: good food, a ferry ride, bicycling on an island, monkeys, a tree-top hike, and as always - plants!
Bangkok
Highlights: more good food, sketchy electrical grids, monkeys, lizards, and a tropical paradise!
I hope you enjoy the reports from their trip, which will last several more weeks. Good thing, as next week on Sunday I will be attending the ALA Midwinter conference in Seattle and will be pre-writing the newsletter so I can just hit send in the morning before I go.
Cheers!
Tidbits
Not much here today, as my mind has been preoccupied with moving logistics and I haven’t been spending a lot of time puttering on the computer. I have put off most of my reading for a while as well - I’ve only got seven items checked out right now!
This Land: spend some time and look closely at this artist’s work - explore the entire piece in detail (thanks @zbkat!)
The Calaveras of José Guadalupe Posada - another favorite artist of mine
Making: checklists, so many checklists…
Reading: thoroughly enjoying listening to Eric Idle read his “sortabiography” while driving around taking care of moving business.
Recently eaten: despite saying we would avoid it (bad Yelp reviews, low expectations, etc.) we tried the new Indian restaurant in town after hearing the food is good. It was! However, the service was abysmal. The wait for food was long, but we got lucky and had our order taken fairly quickly. The waitstaff were disorganized, and working in a constant state of apology for the delay. The cooks need to work on their timing to get orders together for delivery at the same time. I never did get my garlic naan… Not as good as Michael’s curries, but it was tasty.
Video of the Week
A hot tune and stylin’ moves!
Question of the Week
Just hit reply to send your answer, and I’ll share it next week. Always anonymous!
In a thinly veiled attempt to have others provide content for next week’s newsletter, let’s do something with music.
Share a fun and funky video that you enjoy - the criteria being that it must be from the 1980’s or earlier!

Last week I asked if you have any possessions that would survive a major decluttering purge.
I would never part with my family photos. Other likely survivors are my German schrank, and my tea and coffee pot collection.
About 6 or 7 years ago I did a really big pre-move cull of literature/non-fiction and it worked out fine, as most of what I gave away is easily found at the library, but I kept the many irreplaceable art books that I expect will form the walls of my tomb.
I am a dishes hoarder. When I moved last summer I easily and with zero regret purged at least 50% of my clothes. Took loads of stuff to VV, but I packed all my china (3 sets) and all my vintage Pyrex and glassware.
