That's Gneiss! #58 ~ Snap decision!
Is waking up early on the weekends a curse of getting older? Or maybe just poor sleep in general? I woke up so early today and after laying in bed with my mind racing I decided to just get up. I’ve got loads to do today, and getting this written early will help. The dog is snoring away nearby, and I’m a bit jealous.
It turns out that Michael and I are very good at making major decisions. You will recall that a month or so ago I informed you we’d decided to move. Once we started talking about it, it took just a few minutes to firm up our decision. Yesterday it took us all of five minutes to decide that no, we really don’t want to rent our house out - we will sell it instead. It turns out we’d both been having the same thoughts of dread at the idea of becoming landlords, and once it was voiced BOOM. Decision made. And boy was it freeing! We’re both feeling much better and are excited to get the house on the market in January.

I rushed to get the dog out on his walk this morning to beat the rain (which still hasn’t arrived). The wind is really kicking up and it lent an air of frigid humor to our walk. Humorous wind? When it blows over inflatable decorations, yes! Even more so when they’re hideous decorations - camouflage Santa and snowman? Rowland wasn’t sure what to make of Santa’s feeble attempt at pushups and snowman’s teetering back and forth. We had to watch them for quite a while, then Rowland kept looking back over his shoulder to make sure they weren’t following us when we finally walked away. He didn’t bark, but they sure got his hackles up!
I also drove past a house that’s usually got over-the-top decorations - nothing this year. I did however, discover this gem:
Cake.
All right then!
I don’t think anything will ever surpass my favorite decoration, spotted several years ago here in town.
Whatever works.
All right - I’ve got boxes to pack! Until next week…

Have you seen this year’s NPR Book Concierge? It’s dangerous, in a good way. I only looked at the graphic novel selection and put at least 10 books on hold!
I’m enjoying The Art of Noticing newsletter, and am looking forward to the book!
Planning: our annual Darwin Day trip to the coast - 3 nights in Seaside, Oregon booked!
Recently eaten: a tasty burger for lunch at Toby’s Tavern yesterday, in celebration of our big decision! Okay, we would have eaten there anyhow.
Making: carving, carving, carving! It’s addictive. I do actually make things from the stamps I carve. Both are highly satisfying.
Reading: I had a graphic novel binge (see above), and listened to a great audiobook. The graphic novels: The Wicked +the Divine (vol. 7), Bingo Love (sweet), Why Art? (weird), and Coyote Doggirl (really weird). The audiobook was Dear Fahrenheit 451: Love and Heartbreak in the Stacks - if you like books about books, this is the book for you! Funny and sweary, and full of snippets about books good and bad. Your TBR list will grow even more after reading this book!
Video of the Week
This popped up on my iPod this week, and I found this delightful clip from a 1969 television show to share with you.

Last week I asked what the most exciting thing that happened to you this year was.
I got a real job with a living wage and health insurance. Woo hoo.
My answer to "what was the most exciting thing that happened to you in 2018?" would be - getting a job that requires me to travel internationally - and perhaps will see me move to Copenhagen! That's pretty damn exciting. :)
My new job!
Hmmm… there’s definitely a trend there. A very positive trend!
