That's Gneiss! #57 ~ waiting, waiting...
Today has turned into a weird day. Not because anything strange has happened, but because we are WAITING. The post office says they will be delivering a package today and Michael wants to make sure we don’t miss it, seeing as it is the season of package thieves. This is not unprecedented - a couple of years ago Michael had purchased a Laughing Hyenas record and despite notification it had been delivered, he never saw it. Seeing as it’s Sunday and this is obviously an extra run for the post office, who knows when it will get here?
We had planned to go out for breakfast today, but now that will wait until next week. The most annoying thing about the waiting is that it creates a mindset that makes it hard to DO anything. Which doesn’t make any sense, but there you go.

This morning on the walk with Rowland I saw something interesting. There’s a spot where a woman puts out birdseed all the time, and usually there’s loads of pigeons and little brown birds mucking around. Today I noticed a larger bird sitting on the curb, and as we got closer I could see that it was a hawk of some kind. I am fairly sure it’s a Cooper’s Hawk, but not 100%. It sat there and didn’t budge while we walked by on the opposite side of the street. Just waiting for its breakfast to come by I guess.
The other birds weren’t having it - they were all sitting on the wires above.
The waiting is over! Thank goodness. I finally went shopping by myself, and the delivery came just a few minutes before I got home. Michael can rest his mind now, and we can carry on with our day. What’s left of it anyhow.
Look at that - it’s time to walk the dog again!
Have a wonderful week!
Tidbits
The Red Hand Files - ask Nick Cave anything you’d like. My favorite.
Anecdotes of Animals (1905) - short tales of animal antics, with illustrations
A collection of rather old people, and one tortoise.
This is really bizarre and creepy.
How Restaurants Got So Loud - it’s not your imagination. I can’t help but think of Cowiche Canyon Kitchen in Yakima, which is a very open, very loud restaurant.
Making: #CarveDecember has begun, and so have I. I love looking to see what everyone else has done.
Recently eaten: we had lamb burgers last night and I was able to enjoy it, as I did not slip and fall on the dog’s bed just before dinner (like last time). They were great!
Reading: I finished The Trespasser, which means I’ve read (or rather listened to) every Tana French book this year. I can’t remember the last time I found an author I enjoyed so much that I plowed through all of their books! I’m a bit between books, but did start Words and Music: A History of Pop in the Shape of a City by Paul Morley. I’ve got a bunch of other things sitting around, but haven’t decided which way to go yet.
Videos of the Week
Paul Morley starts off his book with thoughts about Kylie Minogue’s Can’t Get You Out of My Head, so I thought I’d better take a listen. Is it the perfect pop song?
This one hits the spot this week.
Question of the Week
Just hit reply to send your answer, and I’ll share it next week. Always anonymous!
The year is almost over - what was the most exciting thing that happened to you in 2018?

Last week I asked what you would miss most if you found yourself without the internet for a few days.
I would miss access to my music most. Most of my music is on the cloud. After that, I'd miss access to podcasts. That said, I think I'd be okay as I can dig into a book in silence just fine. I've been shifting to communicating with people via text and phone calls more and more.
