That's Gneiss! #49 ~ The Mystery of the Leaking Floor
I thought the week before last was pretty exciting, what with getting the new job. This week topped it! But it wasn’t really the sort of excitement one wants in their life.
Behold the mysterious leak that developed on Tuesday:
It has been several days of visits from plumbers and water damage restoration folks. At first it was quite the puzzle, as there was no obvious leakage inside the house. Theories tossed around included soaking from recent rain and groundwater seeping upwards. However, the geologist in me never bought those ideas because they just did not make sense.
The plumbers are returning tomorrow, because we finally narrowed it down to an area under the laundry room. Hopefully they will be able to figure out exactly what’s causing the problem - though it’s not a particularly easy space to work in. I suspect we’re going to have a ripped up laundry room soon. Yay.
Gravity has been our friend - the water is flowing towards the front of the house. If had gone the other way, it might have been a very long time before we noticed a problem. Here’s the view from the back - it’s not the toilet leaking!
I will be glad when we get everything sorted out, but I fear it’s going to be a long haul.
The leak did not stop us from heading to Seattle to see Shellac last night at the Tractor Tavern. Shellac is one of those bands you must see when they come through town - drop everything and go! I’ve shared a couple of videos below for your viewing pleasure, and here are some photos I took last night.
Steve Albini was in top form, but at the far side of the stage from us. If you’re not familiar with him, you most likely are familiar with his sound engineering work. Also check out the food blog he kept for a couple of years. Truly a genius who has made a mark on the world.
The woman next to me appeared to record the entire show with the little camera you can see at the bottom of the picture - I’ll have to see if it shows up online.
Bob Weston - his bass playing looked effortless.
Todd Trainer… amazing to watch and listen to. Drummers are a different species altogether. If you’re in Minneapolis you can take lessons from him - check out some of his students!
It was a great show but the trip home late at night is always a bugger. No more shows until November, when we go see Algiers. I should be able to catch up on sleep by then…
Have a great week my friends - may your home not develop strange leaks and may you have fine music to listen to.

Tidbits
One more week until I leave for Monterey!
Grilled cheese and book pairings for your delight.
Mapping With Style - which is your favorite?
Recently Craftsy merged with a company called bluprint. This week you can watch all classes for free.
Are you a feather fan? Now you can learn to identify the feathers you find with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Feather Atlas. Search or browse by species, and check out the Glossary to learn more about feathers.
Speaking of feathers, my friend Mike takes some amazing photos of birds and places he’s traveled. Visit his site when you need to escape the madness.
I’m going to have to try this app - Clapping Music (hear the original)
Making: I carved some stamps this week!
Recently eaten: We ate well this week, despite the leak trauma. Michael made quiche, which has the most wonderful cheese-filled pastry. He also made tomato soup using our tomatoes and basil from the garden.
Reading: Still a little slim here. I started another Tana French audiobook, The Secret Place.
Videos of the Week
Last night we were in Ballard, a community that has changed greatly over the years. It used to be a sleepy corner of Seattle, known for its Nordic heritage and maritime industry. Today Ballard is a hoppin’ spot, recently named one of the 14 Coolest Hipster Neighborhoods in the USA, although some disagree.
Let’s reminisce about the good old days of Ballard, shall we?
And here is Shellac, the band we saw last night.
One more, because it is awesome - and more recent. Those kids!
Question of the Week
Each week I ask a question - just hit reply to send your answer if you're so inclined. I'll share your answers next week - anonymously of course!
What music are you listening to these days that makes you happy?

Last week I asked about your best Halloween costumes.
In kindergarten my mom dressed me up like a telephone. She made a cardboard dial that I wore like a sandwich sign and I wore the receiver on my head! She let me color it. The year was 1976.
Favorite Halloween costume is probably the one I just did - Héctor from Coco.
I was Axl Rose (circa 1989) in the early 2000’s. It was pretty convincing. I ended up out late with friends and slept on a friends couch. The next morning was a Sunday and I had to walk home, doing the “walk of shame” in spandex fake leather pants, cyclo boots and a red head wig... it was a pretty hot day and I must of been a sight for the church crowd...
