That's Gneiss! #48 ~ Helpful signs
What a week.
I start a new job tomorrow! In 12 hours! A new job!
My new title is Lead Librarian for Information Services. Goodbye Public Computing… you were a good time, but I’m ready to move on. No more sweating every time I type the word “public” that I’ll make that fatal error. No more a lot of things I’m not going to go into here, because you either already know or don’t care. Now I’ll turn my focus to what many people would consider more traditional librarian pursuits - getting information to the people that need it, when and where they need it. There will be a lot to learn and it’s going to get intense right away, and I am so excited for the challenge. I feel like tomorrow is the first day of school - I’ve set out my clothes, and I’ll make sure to get a good night’s rest tonight.
More news to come on that front!
Today I met up with a friend and went for a walk at Fort Ebey State Park. We are incredibly lucky to have so many state parks close by, and this if one of the finest. Twenty-five miles of trails wind all over the park, along the bluff overlooking the water or through the woods. There were a lot of lovely things to see, including much greenery, mushrooms, and very helpful signs.
I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s walk in the woods! It’s getting late and I have a big day tomorrow. By next week things should start to return to normal…
Tidbits
Hmmm… I think I’ll pass.
Help map ground cover with the NASA GLOBE Observer app!
Ugly? More like amazing.
Are you one who likes ambient noise while working or getting off to sleep? Here’s a selection of sites to help you find just the right thing. Ooh - Noisli is pretty cool (but I might be tempted to watch the screen color change and get nothing done).
Making: I did a cooking thing! A rarity, I know. I made zucchini bread - this is the recipe I return to every year. It uses a lot of zucchini, and I put one of our apples into as well. I also made some overnight oats - I’m on a roll, kids!
Recently Eaten: We ate lunch at the Big Lake Bar & Grill while out on our drive yesterday. Not the best in the world, but not the worst. It was nice to get out and try a new place though.
Reading: I haven’t had the concentration to read much. Nearly finished with Faithful Place. I did pore through a couple of interesting books with a lot of pictures. Ray Troll (my favorite artist) has a new one out called Cruisin’ the Fossil Coastline - eye candy for me! Another visual treat is Photoviz, all about using photographic techniques for data visualization. Check out the author’s Tumblr for an eyeful!
Videos of the Week
I woke up with this song in my head today. This happens somewhat regularly, compared to other earworms that invade my mind. And I don’t mind - I love the song!
I don’t think Nolan and Mia will mind that I shared this video of them taken a couple of weeks ago when they visited the Pando aspen grove in Utah. Pando is one giant organism, over 80,000 years old. It looks like an amazing place!Question of the Week
Each week I ask a question - just hit reply to send your answer if you're so inclined. I'll share your answers next week - anonymously of course!
What is the best Halloween costume you’ve had (as a kid or adult)?
Last week I asked about your favorite Fall food.
Being from Florida and back there now, hot soups are pretty rare until the real cold snap starts usually late November (after Hurricane season). So soup in general is a favorite Fall food. But one of my favorite indulgences is actually a leftover. The ubiquitous - Turkey Sammy. But it has to be a certain way, pretty much unhealthy but it’s so good in it’s simplicity. Leftover cold turkey. Cheap white bread (crucial) - usually ‘Wonder’. Head lettuce. ‘ Hellmans’-or ‘Best Foods’ out West of the Rockies) mayonnaise. Salt and pepper. The lettuce must be stacked higher than turkey. A lot of mayo. Do not toast “bread”.
Reminds me of every holiday in the Fall. I also love pumpkin everything, but that’s probably due to my birthdays proximity to Thanksgiving.
Meat pies… cottage pie, shepherd’s pie, fish pie. Great comfort food!
